Poem without a title

From Poem Without A Title

Canto XXVI

4 billion years ago
we weren’t here
it was only 2 million years ago
we crawled out of the trees
and first walked the savannah
followed the nile north
and cultivated the fertile valleys
of Europe and Asia
then crossed the bearing land bridge
and spread through
the americas
just over 200 years ago
did we discover the power of steam
just over a hundred years ago flight
then two world wars
and the mass media age was born
we seem to think our species
will live forever
(some god keeps telling us that)
yet i can’t help wondering
where we will be
4 billion years from now
when the sun goes nova
or should i really care

palm sunday

Klaus J. Gerken

the palms of my hands are sweaty
i’m riding into town
hosannah to the highest
i’m here to claim the crown

they hail me as messiah
but that’s not who i am
david is my bloodline
and i am just a man

but no one understands me
they want a daily cure
for whatever they think ails them
and makes them so cock-sure

that i can give them reason
to latch on to the lure

Simplicity

Klaus J. Gerken

I try to emulate my cats:
when I’m nice to them
they show me affection;
if I weren’t
they would show me claws;
I’m always nice to them,
and they always show me affection.
Simplicity is the way to peace.

zzz

Klaus J. Gerken

let’s all get stoned
dance on rubber bones
walk with crooked spoons
worship purple moons

let’s all get stoned
there’s nothing like the truth
corrupting all our youth
we like our hashish smooth

let’s all get stoned
rainbows not just monochrome
laughter softens bones
ha ha he he om

let’s all get stoned
let’s all get…zzzz

lost

Klaus J. Gerken

she was alone
in a world
that didn’t offer her a home
pregnant
sleeping on the street
when her “boy friend”
had an apartment
just a block away
one sometimes doesn’t
want to wake up
to a reality
too terrible
to ponder

the dregs of spring

Klaus J. Gerken
the spring has sprung
the buds are young
tailor made
for the brigade
to go off marching
in the shade
youth is like a
slate of mica
transparent yet a solid
lump (i lika)
so whatever
spring renews
is the repetitious
boring news
not that i object to that
we always hate a bureaucrat
they simply vanish when they can
(only woman builds a man)
slave no longer less we pour
ablution on the threshing floor
sanctify what must be worn
to save your god from any scorn
spring is adam and is eve
neither asked for a reprieve
so consider if i may
to wish you a consoling day
soon the summer will begin
and the heat will melt the dregs of spring

morning blues

Klaus J. Gerken

i
ain’t
know
the
ins
and
outs

i
can’t
tell
you
what
it’s
all
about

sometimes
maybe
i’ll
reveal
what
others
stake
upon
a
deal

but
right
now
i’m
just
too
damn
tired
to
give
a
hoot
about
flat
tires

choice

Klaus J. Gerken

as god is my witness
i swear by command
i haven’t done nothing
that you’d understand
don’t be surprised
there’s a negative there
the truth does not favour
a positive flair

without a commitment
you flounder like cork
on a lake without purpose
like an empty new york
you ain’t gonna notice
you ain’t gonna care
the journey is shallow
and the point empty air

now i haven’t wrote nothing
that you want to read
i ain’t won no prizes
and i ain’t gonna plead
forever myself
not a difficult choice
i won’t be contained
and i’ll keep my own voice
